Soria is a province in Spain’s central Castile and León region.
In the northeast, the provincial capital, Soria, is on the Río Duero.
It's known for medieval streets and Romanesque architecture, such as San Juan de Rabanera church, the Iglesia de Santo Domingo, and the ruined Arcos de San Juan de Duero monastery with its striking cloisters.
The history of Soria is linked to the neighbouring Celtiberian settlement of Numancia, whose inhabitants led a heroic defence of the city against the seige of the Roman Empire ( II c. B.C.).
Later, due to its strategic situation, the area was the subject of a battle between Christians and Muslims ( IX c.).
After its incorporation into the Crown of Castile, Soria experienced its peak during the reign of Alfonso VIII ( XII-XIII c.) and throughout the whole of the Middle Ages it was an important manufacturing centre based on wool production.
